Senior Kindergarten Student Led Conferences

  Last Thursday and Friday,
our Senior Kindergarten Students had their Progress Report conferences with their parents.  We were very proud of the way all the students led their parents through the process of showing their learning and accomplishments in reading, writing and mathematics.
We hope the parents
also found it a useful and informative way
to see and hear about
 their child's progress, so far,
in Senior Kindergarten.

If you have any suggestions re. how we could improve the process, please let us know.  You can respond to this post, or contact us directly with a note or phone call.

Earth Rangers Visit Nellie McClung Public School

Last week, the Earth Rangers were at our school and put on various presentations to the students in our school.  The Earth Rangers always bring some animal ambassadors to help get their messages about conservation across to their audiences.  We hope you enjoy the following blogs that were written by some students in our class:

Yesterday,   the  Earth  Rangers  came  to  our  school  to  talk  about  taking  care  of  the  earth.  First  we  saw  a  snake.   Then  we  saw  a  hawk.   Last,  we saw  a  pine  marten.   I  liked  the  show.

We will be exchanging our library books tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 22, since Friday is a P.A. Day.

The Borrow-a-Book book bags will also be sent home tomorrow.

Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair this week in the library.  If you would like your child to make a purchase, please send a note along with the money in his/her plastic communication bag tomorrow.  (A big thank you to Mrs.Gordon-Rak, our teacher-librarian, for organizing and running the Book Fair!  The profits from the book fair are used to purchase books for our school library.)

Provincial Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week: Nov. 18 to 24, 2012

While everyday is anti-bullying day, we kicked off Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week today at our school.  A guest reader came to our class and read  The Jungle Bullies  to us.  We learned that we can stand up to a bully just like the animals did in the story.  We will be learning more about preventing and stopping bullying all week long.

Parents/Guardians, you may want to visit the following site to read more information about bullying:  www.PREVNET.ca
The site is filled with great information for parents/guardians to help their children whether they are being bullied, are bullying others or witness others being bullied.

A Few More Patterns...

Here are a few more photos of patterns:

Stay  tuned...
we  will  be  making  more  patterns!

Name that Pattern!

When we make patterns, we name them.  We can describe the pattern using the attribute(s) that we used.  For  example,  we can name this pattern   @@  ##  @@  ##
             Red, red, black, black.

Or we could name it:  A, A, B, B.
Using letters helps us compare patterns more easily.

For example:  #     and   & $  &  $  &  $
are  both  AB  patterns.
It is easier to see that these 2 patterns are the same kind of pattern when we name them using letters.

Here are some photos of patterns that were made today, Thursday, November 15.  (Ask your child if his/her pattern is in any of the photos.):

We Have Been Learning About...

I have a bushy tail, strong teeth and sharp claws.  Who am I?

If you guessed 'a squirrel', you are correct!

We have been learning about tree squirrels for the last few weeks.  This is a good time of year for locating squirrel nests, called dreys, in trees.  Here is a photo of a drey from Ms.Guerriero's neighbourhood:

The drey is on the right side of the photo.
The other nest is a bird's nest.

As a culminating activity to our
learning unit about squirrels, we are writing a non-fiction (information) book about squirrels.

The great news is that Mrs. Gordon-Rak, our librarian, said she would allow us to put our book in the library for other students to borrow and read!  We will let you know when our book is published!

Patterns, Patterns, Everywhere!

In our math programme, we started working on patterns today.  The repeating nature of patterns helps us predict what comes next.  We will be working on identifying patterns, extending patterns and creating our own patterns.
Working with patterns is important because our number system is based upon patterns.

Here are some of the patterns that were made this afternoon by the students in our class:

Room 110 News - Written by the Kindergarten Students

This morning, we planted bulbs in one of the Kindergarten flower beds.  A bulb is a special type of seed.  The bulbs looked like onions and garlic cloves, but these bulbs will grow into flowers.  We planted tulips and daffodils and crocuses and irises.  We hope we will see our flowers in the spring!

Kindergarten Update from Room 110

Remembrance Day

Last week, we prepared for Remembrance Day by reading and discussing the book, Why Do We Remember?.
We found out that we stop each November 11th to remember all the men and women who have lost their lives over the years fighting to protect Canadians and others around the world. We are very fortunate to live in a country like Canada where we enjoy so many freedoms.

Since November 11th fell on a Sunday this year, our Remembrance Day School Assembly was held on Friday, November 9th.  Each class presented their wreaths, and there were a few musical presentations.  We were very proud of our class because they remembered to be quiet and respectful throughout the assembly.

Junior Kindergarten Observation Visits
Parents of Junior Kindergarten students will be beginning their visits tomorrow, November 12.   We will have parents visiting our classroom over the next few weeks to observe their child in the classroom setting.  Parents of JK students will receive their child's report on the day of their visit.  Please remember not to bring younger brothers or sisters to the visit if possible.

Senior Kindergarten Progress Reports
